Full Description

Discover the Church’s millennial history and the oldest church in Rome through one of its iconic sites: the Basilica of St. John Lateran, the Lateran Apostolic Palace and the enchanting medieval cloister.

According to Church tradition, the Basilica of St. John Lateran is the oldest church in the world, as it was the first Christian Basilica built to gather the entire Christian Community around its Bishop....

The tour begins in the Lateran Palace, commissioned by Pope Sixtus V in the late 1500s on the site of the ancient Patriarchate, the primary residence of the Popes for over a millennium.

Crossing the majestic Grand Staircase of the Lateran Palace, you will enter the Basilica of San Giovanni, the “Mother” of all Western Churches, built immediately after the Edict of Constantine in 313 AD.
You will conclude in the Cloister of the Basilica of San Giovanni, an oasis of peace where elegant columns and medieval marble recount centuries of history and devotion.

Let yourself be guided and listen to the stories of our official guide: you will discover stories about the christian churches, frescoed rooms, religious and artistic symbols, and enjoy a moving experience combining art, faith, and history.
